The Toadies don’t reinvent themselves on No Deliverance, their first album in seven years. They simply reaffirm their status as one of rock’s most ferocious bands.

Though never a household name, the D-FW group tapped the post-Nirvana zeitgeist with 1994’s Rubberneck, which sold a million copies and spawned “Possum Kingdom” – a spooky radio hit about obsession and possible murder. (more…)

With No Deliverance, The Toadies revert to the bare bones of their past

It was a Big Deal time slot: Lollapalooza co-headliners Wilco and Rage Against the Machine were scheduled to go on at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 2, only about an hour after The Toadies were scheduled to perform their own gig at the three-day Chicago festival.

And, in a sense, it was like a perfect storm—which is to say that most roads led fans to The Toadies’ set. During the revered Fort Worth post-grunge band’s time slot, there were only two options for festival-goers: seeing retro soul act Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings—definitely a worthy choice for some fans—or taking a chance on a set from a band most attendees hadn’t thought about in, oh, 10 years or so. As a result, there The Toadies were—frontman Vaden Todd Lewis, guitarist Clark Vogeler, drummer Mark Reznicek and new bass player Doni Blair (formerly of Hagfish)—about to play a show in Chicago’s Grant Park to a massive crowd of curious listeners. Fans never gave up hope – and the Toadies breathe again.

When tickets went on sale for a Toadies show at the Ridglea Theater in June, diehard fans scooped them up within 45 minutes. After that, online scalpers asked as much as $150 for a pair. But they couldn’t find many to resell: Few were willing to part with their chance to witness the first Toadies hometown show since the band broke up in 2001. As far away as New York City, another Toadies show at the Bowery Ballroom sold out all 500 seats in a day. (more…)
