Times have changed for The Toadies. Vocalist Vaden Todd Lewis laughs, “Now at our shows, people say, ‘My mom told me to see you guys!’ That’s bizarre. Or they show up because they played the song on Guitar Hero. It’s a great, weird mix of people. It’s really cool.” Whether you heard them on Guitar or Hero or in Mom’s CD player, The Toadies are one of those rare bands that you can’t easily forget. Remember the first time you heard the jagged, off-kilter rhythm of their darkly comic hit, “Possum Kingdom?” When wiry mainman Vaden wailed, “Do you want to die?” during the song’s final crescendo, it was strangely inviting. That’s the name of the game for the quirky Texas rock band. They’ve never quite fit in, but that’s why you still remember them. (more…)

Rockin’ Toadies return to their kingdom

There’s no better song to set the tone of the new Toadies CD – the band’s first in seven years – than its title track.

“No Deliverance” touts the same sort of iconic riffs and seductive vocals that gave ’90s hits “I Come from the Water” and “Possum Kingdom” their staying power. Though sonically familiar, it’s also a welcome departure from modern-rock radio’s never-ending angst parade.

“We’re proud of it,” Toadies singer Vaden Todd Lewis said of the new album during a phone chat last month. (more…)

Rock reunions rooted in the ’90s are de rigueur these days — from Stone Temple Pilots to Extreme — so no time like the present for Cowtown’s own alt-rock export, the Toadies, to re-form and release its first new music in almost a decade.

Not all of the returning rockers are successful, but in most cases, the powerful pull of nostalgia is enough to boost most bands over any bumpy patches. In the case of the Toadies, despite being down one original member (bassist Lisa Umbarger), the Vaden Todd Lewis-led quartet is ripping through its muscular melodies as though hardly any time has passed. The Toadies don’t reinvent themselves on No Deliverance, their first album in seven years. They simply reaffirm their status as one of rock’s most ferocious bands.

Though never a household name, the D-FW group tapped the post-Nirvana zeitgeist with 1994’s Rubberneck, which sold a million copies and spawned “Possum Kingdom” – a spooky radio hit about obsession and possible murder. (more…)
